For this assignment, each team is expected to do a review of a building envelope case study of their
choice. The example can be from literature (books, articles, architectural websites), but also from your
surroundings or personal travels. We chose the Daniels Building at the University of Toronto. https://www.archdaily.com/916301/daniels-building-at-university-of-toronto-nadaaa
Objectives
• To develop & improve the research skills to search for information on specialized topics;
• To develop an understanding of the façade appearances, tectonic, materiality, components
and technologies that architects need to be aware when designing as well as evaluating
building envelopes;
• To explore new materials and technologies related to sustainability, the building envelopes,
structural systems, and interior and exterior finishes;
• To develop critical thinking toward acquired information in order to be able to make
educated judgement;
• To effectively communicate with peers about architectural and technical issues of some
complexity and participate and contribute in class.
Then, a team is to prepare a review report (up to approximately 3000 words) of the case study based on
gathered information. The review should approximately follow the outline given below and contain
the following sections:
1. Introduction – basic information of the building such as: location (climate, terrain, surroundings),
orientation, type of building (office building, residential, commercial, institutional, etc; if it is a
high rise or low rise; estimation of time of construction; building system: wood-frame, steel-frame,
reinforced concrete, etc.)
2. Main body of the report: envelope descriiption, envelope elements, materiality, tectonic,
images, details, sketches, annotations, explanations, supported by critical review from the
literature…
3. Discussion/ critical review/ your input: What is your opinion based on the information available
to you? What intrigued you to decide to choose this particular case study? Would you
approach the issue differently and why? Provide adequate discussion and/or explanation. Don’t
hesitate to express your personal views.
4. Conclusion / final words: what did you learn from this exercise? How will it affect your future
approach when designing your facades?
5. Bibliography – the complete list of references used in this review.
6. Appendix (if applicable).
Students are encouraged to use photographs, drawings, sketches and/or anything else that can
contribute to better understanding of the case study.3 All the figures are to be numbered as they are
referred in the text. They also should have a caption with the title that explains what is in the figure, as
well as the source.
Special attention will be paid to appropriate referencing in the body of the text.
Please include all references (include the complete web address for internet sources). You MUST
reference ALL sources including a reference for each illustration used in the report, using the already
mentioned APA referencing guide
The use of AI in your assignments
Artificial intelligence based tools have been developing at unprecedented speed. As any tool and or
technology, it could be great if used properly and disastrous if not. While AI can help you kick-start the
work on this assignment, it can also mislead you into the rabbit hole of misinformation, wrong facts and
bad learning.
If you decide to use any AI platform, you are free to do so. In this case:
• Make sure to cite it. To see how to do it, follow these guidelines:
https://subjectguides.uwaterloo.ca/chatgpt_generative_ai/aigeneratedcontentcitation
• In the appendix of your report, you must include the prompts that you entered and the output
that ChatGPT gave you.
• Make sure to verify any information that ChatGPT produced. Remember: “garbage in ® garbage
out”.
The Number of sources is not important.
– in-text citation
– about 10 related pictures to support the case study(Will send you the pictures shortly)
– use reliable sources
