Respond to the discussion questions below based on a clinical case example “Ron”. (Write three detailed paragraphs). You are responsible for using the information from lectures and readings to answer the questions about the case study of “Ron.” Content from lecture should be cited by (Name of lecture, slide #) and content from the reading should be (Chap #, p #). Please be precise and succinct. Although you should be sure that your answer is complete, be aware that I am looking at the quality of your response, not the length. Your first reply post is based on Ron’s case and the model your classmate chose. What was similar or different about the model they chose compared to yours? What are you learning from them? Would you suggest any changes to their thinking? What new content can you add to the conversation? (1 paragraph) Then, for your second paragraph in this same reply, tell your classmate about someone you are close to (it can even be you). [Please do not use any names. And, don’t say, “my best friend” or “my brother” or “my dad” if you think someone could figure out who that was. If you are writing about you, it’s your choice if you say, “a behavior that I’ve tried to change in the past is….” If it’s a friend or relative or even you, it is okay to just say “a friend of mine” or “a relative of mine.”] When describing that friend or relative, talk about the behavior they have that probably needs to be healthier or a behavior change that they made, and which of the models best fit that behavior change process and why. Be specific using the concepts within that model. (3 points)
Now for the second reply, after talking about their interpretation of Ron (1 paragraph) talk about a different friend, the behavior change needed for their health, and the model that best fits and why (3 points).
Ron has problems with chronic back pain and doctors tell him that the only “cure” is surgery. However, the surgery is risky and they don’t want to do the surgery until his back has deteriorated more significantly. He has been prescribed physical therapy exercises to do daily and he does these, albeit about 60% of the time. Ron can also use a TENS unit and heat for pain relief, and he uses these weekly. He began taking over the counter pain relief medications and was recently give a prescriiption for stronger pain medications. He is beginning to rely more heavily on these over time. In response to the pain, Ron often stays home when the rest of his family goes out to do things. He is becoming more and more irritable over time, is having trouble sleeping, doesn’t seem to enjoy doing things, and is taking progressively higher doses of prescriiption medication. Ron is starting to miss work because of this problem and his job requires physical labor. He has limited paid time off and misses income when he isn’t at work. His family (wife and 3 children ages 3, 7, and 13) is frustrated and doesn’t know how to help.
How to prepare for the “Ron” part of your 2nd Post.
1. Listen to the lectures and read the book chapter and e-reserves readings.
2. Review each model of health behavior. You might want to take your own notes on each model, comparing and contrasting the models to one another.
3. Review Ron’s case.
4. Decide which model you think provides the best explanation for the problems with adherence that Ron is experiencing. To make this decision, look at each model and determine whether you can apply Ron’s case to each component in the model. The best model is the one that incorporates most or all of the aspects of his case and that helps the provider think of ways to help Ron. There is no single right answer, just some models that fit his case better than others.
5. Once you’ve chosen a model, make sure that you run through the model quickly on paper, drawing it out and writing quick notes to yourself about aspects of the case that are applicable to each part of the model. Think about how different factors might interact with one another in this model to result in non-adherence
Finally, write three paragraphs describing how each component of the model applies to this case. If you aren’t sure you understand how to do this, listen to one of the lectures again for an example of how to apply a case to a model.
