Scenario Setting – You are to create a fictional site that you will be excavating.
Describe the nature of the site
Where is it?
From when does it date or what is the range of dates?
What do you know about the place before excavating?
Create as much detail as possible about your site. While your site is fictional, you want to incorporate as much science & reality into your answer as possible. This project is meant to be a grand synthesis of what you studied in this class.
Scenario Planning – You are the head archaeologist at your site, a place that has never been excavated before.
Discuss how you will go about excavating
What do you find once you begin digging?
What methods are you going to use to study the various artifacts/ecofacts/features that you uncover?
Your excavation may take place over days or even years
Describe and explain all the archaeological data that you uncover & interpret
What do you find, and what does it mean?
Note: Your budget is unlimited (a real fantasy), so you are not limited in what types of studies you will do.
Your essay project will be graded on how well, and to what extent, you incorporate the various aspects of archaeology that you have studied throughout this semester. In that sense, this is a cumulative experience in which you creatively write about things you have learned.
