150 WORD PROPOSAL Your paper should focus on the music of a specific culture/group/region/country and how it relates to or is informed by at least one source of diversity (e.g., age, disability, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, social class, or other). To give you an idea, some possible paper topics may include: racial identity in Senegalese hip-hop, politics and social change in Chilean Nueva Canción, women mariachis in Mexico, cultural appropriation in Bollywood film music, Jewish identity in klezmer music, etc. The assignment should engage with the types of questions and concepts we have been exploring throughout the semester. You must therefore include a discussion of the particular music-culture and the relevance of the music, instrument(s), and/or performers to that culture. What is the social significance and function of the music? Does it provide any kind of social/political commentary? In what contexts is it performed? Does the music remain strictly rooted in tradition, or is it transformed through the addition of elements from other musics/cultures? How is this focus on tradition and/or transformation related to the source of diversity (ethnicity, gender, race, etc.) that you are choosing to examine? In addition, you must reflect on your own cultural norms or values (both musical and otherwise) in relation to those of the cultural group you are studying.
