Read chapters 24 through 27. For each question below, write a short essay IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Be sure to use specific examples from the text to support your claims (you can quote from the textbook to support your answer, but you need to demonstrate how the quote supports your answer: in other words, your answer should not be just a quote from the text, but rather you should explain how the quote demonstrates what you’re trying to say). PLEASE INCLUDE LOTS OF DETAILS SOME TIPS: connect evidence (quotes) to assertions (explain how your evidence supports what you’re saying, don’t just give quotes from the text); use quotation marks for your quotes; maximum points cannot be achieved with meeting minimums: if you want the highest points, give multiple examples and connect them to your answer; ESSAY QUESTIONS: 1) Did the U.S. take a side before entering the Second World War? Using specific examples, explain how the U.S. navigated its neutrality before entering the War. Then, give specific examples of how the War affected different groups of people within the U.S. after the U.S. entered the War. (HINT: ch. 24) 2) The Cold War permeated all aspects of U.S. society. Using at least four specific examples, explain how the Cold War impacted EITHER foreign OR domestic policies in the U.S. (you are choosing either foreign or domestic policies and giving specific examples to support your assertions). (HINT: ch. 25) 3) In much of contemporary media, the 1950s are portrayed in an idealized fashion (some politicians even want to return to a 50s-type America). Demonstrate with at least three examples of how the 1950s might be seen as a time of greatness AND at least three examples of how it might be seen as a time of problems. Do you believe that the positives outweigh the negatives or vise versa or neither? Why? (HINT: ch. 26) 4) Using at least two specific examples from each administration, describe and explain what you think are the greatest domestic and foreign issues or events for both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. You must give examples from BOTH administrations and not just one or the other. (some issues/events extend beyond just one administration; you can use that issue/event for both, BUT you must provide specific examples connected to it from each administration (e.g., you cannot just say “Civil Rights Movement,” but you must give specific examples of the CRM distinct to each administration)) (HINT ch. 27)
